The History of Fencing from Trex Company

Since 1996, Trex® has invented, defined and perfected the composite deck category, becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products. Never content to settle, they continue to make strides in outdoor engineering, melding innovation with environmental responsibility and beautiful form with powerful function. Leveraging their success with decking led to the inclusion of other compatible products. Primary among them was composite fencing, a unique and innovative application of material that had already proven its value.

Formed through the buyout of a division of Mobil Corporation, our company went public in 1999. Today they offer the industry’s widest array of high-performance composite products, which are available in more than 40 countries around the world. With the largest market share of composite decking in North America, a growing international footprint and over $650,000,000 in annual sales, they lead the industry on a global scale. From decking to fencing and all products in between, Trex is a trusted brand that consumers count on to perform at the highest level.

There’s a reason Trex is the world’s #1 composite fencing brand: they offer the most innovative, technologically advanced outdoor living products available today. As the first company to combine the durability of recycled plastic with the natural beauty of reclaimed wood in high-performance products, Trex leads the way in applying this proprietary technology to a wide variety of outdoor applications for low-maintenance, luxurious outdoor living.
Introduced in 2005, Trex Seclusions® fencing has lead the way in establishing composite materials as high end alternatives to wood and vinyl. As the most successful first generation of composite materials and the leading generation in fencing, Trex composite combines a natural look with low maintenance. From the immediate exterior of your home to the perimeter of your property, Trex products truly define outdoor living.

The Collaboration between FDS and Trex

FDS Fence Distributors (formerly CFC Fences and Decks) began as a fencing contractor in 1989, installing all types of fencing and decking materials. Projects were carefully handled from start to finish with a focus on creating excellent customer experiences with a high level of craftsmanship. As our business grew, so did our facilities. We soon added supply yards and later distribution yards that could handle the increasing demand for fencing and decking materials.

Early on, we developed close ties with Trex Company and were designated with Trex’s ProPlatinum deck builder status, the highest recognition from the company. FDS also designed and installed several trade show exhibits for Trex as well as received many other accolades and awards from Trex for sales, creativity and customer service.

In the early 2000’s, vinyl and wood fencing were flourishing in our market. However, there was not a product that was durable, low maintenance, and also beautiful and functional. Wood and Vinyl fencing fit some of these requirements but not all of them.  Seeing the success that we were having in the decking market with Trex composite decking, we approached Trex with an idea of creating a composite fence. The rest is history. For the next several years, we worked hand in hand with Trex’s R&D department creating a composite fence that mimicked the look and strength of our most popular wood fence style at that time, only now with a material that would not rot, split, need painting or staining and could withstand extreme climates. With our expertise in fencing and Trex’s expertise in manufacturing, it was the perfect partnership for creating a fence product that was sure to be successful.

Trex Composite Fence

Near the end of 2005, we installed the first Trex Seclusions composite fence at the foot of the Wasatch mountains in Provo, UT.  After a professional photo shoot of the project and a national marketing campaign, Trex Seclusions Fencing was introduced to the nation. FDS soon developed and built gates for the fencing product that would later be sent to Trex for national distribution.  We also created installation guides and many other marketing pieces and innovations to propel the fencing product. At this time, FDS became one of many distributors of the fencing product across the nation, but would later take over all of the marketing and distribution of the fencing product in 2011 to take it to the next level. Since then, we have seen double digit growth year after year as the Trex Fencing Product has gained traction throughout the country as a premier fencing product. Trex Fencing is now being used not only to fence in back yards, but in HOA, commercial, and governmental projects.

FDS continued to be at the forefront of creativity and design introducing not only new gate designs and additions, but also creating the popular Horizons Fence System, the stylish horizontal fence combining FDS’ propriety frame kit combined with Trex composite components.
