Replacement Caps for Discontinued Trex Fencing Posts

These details will guide you through the process or ordering post caps if you are adding/replacing caps or filing a warranty claim for legacy Trex Fencing post caps that are no longer in production.

First, determine if the caps are the discontinued profile. The outer dimensions of Trex Fencing posts manufactured prior to 2009 are 5-1/2” x 5-1/2”. This profile was discontinued in 2008 and replaced with a 5” x 5” post. The post caps used for the larger posts also were discontinued and the caps currently in production will only fit the 5” x 5″ post. If post caps are needed for the discontinued posts, the current 5″ x 5″ caps can be used in combination with an adaptor that is set inside the cavity of the post and is attached with finish nails or screws. The tops of the posts will need to be cut down and leveled to allow the bottom of the posts caps to sit at 2-3” above the top of the top rail (see diagram below).

Because the old post caps cover a portion of the tops of the old posts, it is likely the color underneath has not weathered, and dirt and grime may have accumulated. Much of that will be cut off when the old caps are removed, but you may need to clean the newly exposed portion of the existing post. The new post caps will require time to weather to look similar to the older Trex material.

Caps are still available in flat top and pyramid styles.

How to order new caps for legacy posts:

If you are filing a warranty claim due to abnormal degradation of the legacy post caps, contact Trex at 800-BUY-TREX (800-289-8739) to begin the claims process. Before filing the claim, read the Trex warranty to determine if the claim can be covered.

When submitting a claim, create an estimate and click “Save or share cart” to share the pre-order with your Trex claims representative. You will also need to provide pictures of the failed caps. If the claim is approved, Trex will provide a payment to you which you can use to purchase caps with adaptors from FDS Fence Distributors. We are the supplier for post caps with adaptors.
